Project Brief
Sports property was a brand-new product for Yahoo! Taiwan, and also the largest site development for the Media group in year 2007, which took nearly a year to complete the project. At the early stage of development, product manager briefed the project goal, targeting market and users to all stakeholders in the project. We then further analyze concerns, possibilities and contribute ideas. |
In this project, I volunteered to design a sitemap for the ease of site structure discussion. |
After the site structure and main features were defined, producers went on and draft rough wireframes, and we utilized wireframes as a tool to discuss the use flow, layouts and feature details. |
Due to limitation of resource, our design researcher conducted a small quick study for some part of the site where we had uncertainties. Producers and designers were obligated to involve in the research process to observe users’ behaviors or adjust study direction. |
A photo collage was created by all stakeholders to consolidate a consensus on the personality of the site. The primary colors of the site were based on the color palettes generated from the moodboard. |
Design reviews
Frequent design reviews were being held for high priority projects. As for this project, we had one design review with the UED team and many detailed reviews with the sports team. It was my responsibility to present the design concept and collect feedbacks in the design review meeting. |
Once the personality of the site and major pages were defined, I further discussed the detail of each page with producers and product managers, and then design the visual style for all the pages. In this project, I mentored a design assistant to share the workload on the follow-ups, so I could devote more of my attention on higher level design. |
Quality Assurance
Above visual mockups usually would deliver to web developers and engineers after being reviewed by all stakeholders. My role at this stage was to examine returned work and ensure the visual parts and features correspond to our initial design. |
The site was launched in March 2008, and it is now reaching at least one million of page view per day. |
Pattern: Font Usage, Carousel
Since I also play my role as a member of the Yahoo! regional pattern team, some of the interaction or features we established in this project were being collected for patterns library. As a result, other teams could adapt the patterns that were already being discussed or designed to speed up their production process. |

Project Background
Yahoo! Taiwan News is the leading news site in Taiwan with around 10 million of unique users visit every month, which is like half of the population in Taiwan. About 2 years ago, I helped the News team to redesign the site for a new brand image with wide screen resolution layout. Last year, the homepage was requested to be readjusted for more features and advertisement. The biggest challenges of this project are to visual organize a page with overwhelming data and collaborate with many stakeholders from different departments. |
Analyzing users’ click rate on every module is one of our research strategies to understand how Taiwanese users behave on a page. Hence we would develop a plan on how to adjust the modules without changing too much of users’ current behaviors. |
Producer and I both created different version of wireframes, and then we collaborated together to fine-tune the layout, use flow and feature details. |
A moodboard was also created in this project to help me to determine the personality of this site. |
The visual style of the homepage was being modified many times in this project to reach to a consensus among all stakeholders. |
The site was launched in May 2007. The page view of the site has gragually increased in monthly bases. |
